Summer Holiday

What does summer holiday mean to you ?

For me it has changed a lot over the years.

When I was very young and lived at home with my parents, summer holiday meant getting into a car and driving for what seemed like an eternity (but was probably only 2 or 3 hours) and going to a place called Butlins.

Butlins is the name of a group of holiday centres throughout the UK. They are usually on the coast and they are similar to a small village. Once you are inside, you stay inside for the majority of your stay. When I was little we went to a lot of these places. There were organized activities for children of all ages so there was also the opportunity for my parents to relax.

By the time I was a teenager, my parents owned a caravan. In this period, a summer holiday meant going away to a campsite or caravan park for 1 or 2 weeks and visiting other places in the UK.

My first summer holiday with friends was when I was 20. I went to Majorca with two friends for 2 weeks, staying in an apartment owned by my friend’s grandparents.

Now I am a parent myself, summer holiday means something different again. My wife and I are now the ones who organize everything – where we are going, what we are taking, what we are doing when we are there. Summer holiday now means packing suitcases, getting up early and driving to an airport and trying to keep three children entertained for the whole time and making sure they do not fight.

Vacanze estive

Cosa significa vacanze estive per voi? Per me è cambiato molto nel corso degli anni.
Quando ero molto giovane e vivevo a casa con i miei genitori, vacanze estive significava salire in macchina e guidare per quella che sembrava un'eternità (ma erano alla fine solo 2 o 3 ore) per andare in un posto chiamato Butlins.

Butlins è il nome di un gruppo di villaggi turistici in tutto il Regno Unito. Di solito sono sulla costa e sono simili a un piccolo villaggio. Una volta che ci siete, rimanete dentro per la maggior parte del vostro soggiorno. Quando ero piccolo siamo andati in un sacco di questi luoghi. C'erano attività organizzate per i bambini di tutte le età e quindi c'era anche la possibilità per i miei genitori di rilassarsi.

Quando sono diventato adolescente, i miei genitori avevano una roulotte. In quel periodo, vacanza estiva significava andare in campeggio in camper per 1 o 2 settimane e visitare altri luoghi nel Regno Unito. La mia prima vacanza estiva con gli amici è stata quando avevo 20 anni e sono andato a Majorca con due amici per 2 settimane, soggiornando in un appartamento di proprietà dei nonni del mio amico.

Ora che sono un genitore io stesso, vacanza estiva significa ancora qualcosa di diverso. Io e mia moglie ora siamo quelli che organizzano tutto - dove andremo, cosa porteremo e cosa faremo la’. Vacanze estive ora significa fare le valigie, alzarsi presto e guidare fino ad un aeroporto e cercare di intrattenere tre bambini per tutto il tempo e fare in modo che non litighino.
